STONE cross field

Between February 2021 and February 2022 we worked alongside Sheffield Parks and Countryside and Sheffield Forestry teams to develop and enhance the biodiversity of off Hemper Lane at the top of Beauchief Drive. Historically known as ‘Stone Cross Field’ the area was underutilised and boggy and there had also been incursions on to the grass.

Residents were consulted and Greener Greenhill hosted a planning session where the council representatives consulted on draft plans. A development plan was agreed which better protected the area, which involved planting water-loving tress in the boggy areas and also digging out a ‘scrape’ (seasonal pond). Further saplings were planted along the boundary line to create more hedging, particularly in the light of some Ash Die Back impacting locally.  Community planting sessions were held in February and March 2022. Residents have reported seeing more wildlife in the area subsequently and the tree growth is also being monitored via a ‘citizen science’ camera post for the Sheffield City Council Urban Tree Observatory.

We are always open to ideas about what more we can do with this space. Leave a comment below if you there’s something you’d like to see on Stone Cross Field

    Hi.
How about a wildflower meadow? Attract some bees and butterflies.
